Vezio Castle
Perched on a hill of olive groves and woodland overlooking Varenna, Vezio Castle is an ancient medieval fortress, with its crenellated towers and portions of the original walls still standing. The castle is open to the public for most of the year and can be reached on foot from the village through a scenic walk.
ExhibitionsIn addition to the tower, which houses an exhibition of medieval armour and costumes, visitors can explore the underground tunnels, an outpost of the Cadorna Line, a defensive system built during the First World War. Today, the castle hosts cultural events and an exhibition dedicated to the Lariosaurus, a prehistoric marine reptile. The Ghosts of Vezio are among the castle’s most iconic attractions: white sculptures made of gauze and plaster. From the panoramic terrace and the top of the tower, visitors can enjoy breathtaking views over the lake. |
