Villa MonasteroVilla Monastero is a treasure trove of beauty, art and nature overlooking Lake Como. Built on the ruins of an ancient Cistercian monastery, it reflects eight centuries of history: a succession of owners, each with different tastes and styles, has given the Villa its unique eclectic character. Villa Cipressi and gardensVilla Cipressi is an elegant complex built between the 15ᵗʰ and 19ᵗʰ centuries. This carefully restored historic residence blends Neoclassical and Art Nouveau elements and now operates as a charming hotel. Visitors can explore its stunning terraced gardens, which cascade down towards the lake in a succession of staircases, vibrant flowers, plants and trees, including the cypresses that give the villa its name. Path of loversOne of the most picturesque place of Lake Como is the path of lovers (a pedestrian path on a suspended walkway skimming the water), leading from the ferry terminal to Varenna’s historic centre. A romantic lakeside balcony featuring a red wrought-iron railing, a structure entwined with climbing plants, and a red heart that is a favourite for souvenir photos. Particularly impressive at sunset, this walk offers an intimate and poetic experience, with breathtaking views. |
Church of San GiorgioLocated in Varenna’s main square, the Church of San Giorgio has been a spiritual landmark for the local community for centuries. Consecrated in 1313, it is an imposing Romanesque building and a significant example of 14ᵗʰ-century Lombard architecture. Its light stone façade is adorned with a large central rose window and a fresco of Saint Christopher. The simple yet atmospheric interior preserves ancient frescoes of remarkable beauty and notable works such as the Triptych of Saint George, the Polyptych of the Madonna and Child, and a canvas depicting the Baptism of Jesus. The bell tower, which dominates the village skyline, was completed in 1653. |
Vezio CastleBuilt on a hilltop surrounded by olive groves and woodland overlooking Varenna, Vezio Castle is an ancient medieval fortress with surviving crenellated towers and portions of the original walls.
